Growing into Your Potential

“Potential is the seed of something more—more impact, more freedom, more joy, more purpose—waiting to be nurtured.”

Have you ever felt a quiet tug in your spirit that whispers, “There’s something more for me”? That’s potential speaking. It’s not just about talent or ability—it’s the deep sense that within you lies the possibility of transformation.

This past week, as I connected with our GROW book club reading Jon Acuff, I found myself diving deep into the heart of potential and growth. Reflecting back on my journey—especially since joining the John Maxwell Team in 2020—I was reminded just how powerful intentional growth really is. It’s not about reaching a finish line. It’s about choosing to expand, to stretch, and to live a life that counts.

“Potential isn’t just talent. It’s possibility. It’s the courage to act before you see the full path.”

Growth Isn't Automatic—It's Activated

John Maxwell says growth is guaranteed only when three conditions are met:

  • It must be intentional

  • It must be useful

  • It must be continual

Let’s break that down:

1. Intentional Growth

  • Growth doesn’t just happen. You must choose it.

  • Turn desire into decision. Not “fake it till you make it”—learn it till you earn it.

  • Develop two mindsets:

    • Fixed: Begin with the end in mind

    • Flexible: Adjust daily as you grow

💡 Want to join the top 2%? Start doing what the top 10% are willing to do consistently—until you stand apart.

2. Useful Growth

  • Apply the 80/20 rule: Focus on what brings the greatest return.

  • Stay in your strength zone—areas where you naturally thrive (for me: communication, leadership, equipping others).

  • Add value to others daily.

  • Eliminate what doesn’t serve your purpose.

"We often spend energy on things that bring no return. Growth requires focus."

3. Continual Growth

John teaches us four daily growth habits:

  • Read (even just 30 minutes)

  • Listen (expand your perspective)

  • Think (go wide and deep)

  • File (capture what you learn for future use)

Let your growth be a rhythm, not a random event.

“No one coasts to greatness. Everything you want but don’t yet have lives outside your comfort zone.”

Step Out of the Comfort Zone

Which zone are you living in?

  • Coasting Zone: I don’t even do what I’ve done before.

  • Comfort Zone: I only do what I already know how to do.

  • Challenge Zone: I attempt what I’ve never done before.

Greatness is only found in the challenge zone.

What’s Possible When You Grow?

John Maxwell outlines three promises when you commit to growth:

1. Growth Will Be Expandable

“Sad is the day for any man when he becomes absolutely satisfied with the life he is living... when he stops desiring to do something larger which he knows he was meant to do.”

  • Don’t ask “How long will it take?”

  • Ask “How far can I go?”

2. Growth Will Be Fruitful

“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Galatians 6:9 (NIV)

  • What you plant now, you will harvest later.

  • Even when the fruit isn’t visible yet, trust the process.

  • You don’t need a title to lead or a platform to influence. A fruitful life speaks for itself.

“Fruitfulness is a quiet kind of power. You don’t need a title when your life speaks volumes.”

3. Your Life Will Be Beautiful

“I never want to be just what I want to be,
Because there’s always something out there yet for me…
Let me go on growing—up.”
Art Linkletter

When we embrace growth, our lives become a living masterpiece—not because they’re perfect, but because they are purposeful.

What Kind of Leader Are You Becoming?

A seasoned leader:

  • Doesn’t chase applause

  • Sees the big picture

  • Leads with humility, not ego

  • Handles adversity with quiet confidence

  • Is comfortable in their own skin—and never done learning

“Age doesn’t make someone seasoned. What’s required is growth, perspective, grace, endurance, understanding, and faith.”

My Commitment

I want to be able to say:
“My life mattered. I made my life count.”
Because I am blessed beyond belief.

And if you feel that nudge to stretch into the next version of you—that’s your potential whispering:

“Let’s go.”
